Getting Started with PiYo (Again)!

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Shew! It's been a whirlwind of a few weeks recovering from reconstruction! I have to say that heading back into surgery I was NERVOUS.Mostly nervous of how I was going to feel after and honestly, just afraid it was going to cause me to take 5 steps backwards in my journey. But I have to say, at exactly two weeks post surgery, I feel more determined, positive and motivated then ever!

From the minute I knew what the plan was, I KNEW exactly how I was going to get back into the swing of things. It was such an easy decision because I've been there before. I can't wait to get started back up with the program that I originally started my journey with. PiYo.

PiYoYou can read more about how I started my journey here, but let me just tell you that this program was PERFECT for me. I was limited on what I could do after treatment. I still had limited range of motion in my arms, very little strength and stamina and had gained 20 lbs during treatment. Well, this time around I don't have those extra 20 lbs, but I am back to needing to work on my range of motion and building my strength back up. And I know this program can do it.

I have a hard time looking back at these pictures, but at the same time, I'm proud of how far I've come! This was after just the first 30 days of PiYo! That's HALF of the program! In those first 30 days I lost 10 lbs and over 9.5 inches! I was amazed!

PiYo was perfect for me because I didn't have to jump. I didn't need weights. I wasn't straining my arms or my joints in any way. It was all low impact and exactly what I needed to start. All I needed was my own body weight and because the moves were all low impact (but still high intensity), it was the perfect combination. I was able to stretch, strengthen and stabilize pretty much every part of my body! Coming from the person that couldn't even carry the vacuum up the steps at the time, that's pretty good!

This is why I am so excited when folks decide to join our team with this program. Because I'm living proof that it WORKS! And it works no matter what your starting point is! If I can start with this program, ANYONE can! I have two more weeks left until I have the full go ahead to jump back into exercising, but you better believe I'll be ready come the beginning of May to pop in my PiYo DVDs. I would love to have some other folks join me too!

Would you give it a try for just 30 days?!

We can do it together with PiYo, Shakeology, AND a FREE 30-day trial membership to the Team Beachbody Club, which will give you the ability to stream your PiYo workouts on your laptop, tablet or phone!

Oh, and did I mention it's on SALE only for the month of April?!?!

Maybe you want to lose weight and burn fat without the high-impact jumps or complex choreography like I did. Maybe you want to just build lean muscle but don't want to lift heavy weights? Maybe you want the results like a more extreme program, but your body just isn't ready for that level yet? Maybe you really like Pilates and Yoga?! Maybe you don't want to have to buy a lot of equipment?!

If any of that sounds like what you are looking for, join me because I'm starting in May too!

Motivation Monday: Be Stronger Then Your Excuses

Monday, February 9, 2015

There are so many days where I come home from work and just start talking myself out of pushing play. Especially on those days when I got up early to work on coaching activities before work, then head off to my day job and put in a full day, filled with meetings and stress and firedrills. Then it's off to pick up The Squishy from school, and most likely, deal with some sort of meltdown because he didn't nap that day.

>>>  I could say that I'm too tried from a long day of work.

>>>  I could say that I'll just do it tomorrow.

>>>  I could say that I have laundry or cleaning to do instead.

>>>  I could say that I don't have time. I'm just too busy.

>>>  I could say that I had pizza for lunch, so I might as well throw the whole day away.

>>>  I could find a thousand different excuses. Believe me, I've done it before. For years.

But  I already know what giving up like that feels like. And for once, I want to know what it feels like when I don't give up. I want to know what it feels like when I am finally stronger then my excuses.

Motivation Monday: Because I Could

Monday, February 2, 2015

I honestly kind of thought that I was threw all the big "one year anniversaries" back in October. Maybe it was because I was SO afraid of October and worked SO hard to conquer it...

(which I totally did kthanks - October, don't let the door hit you on your way out - just sayin')

...but I really didn't think about many "cancer" anniversaries outside of that and my one year anniversary of being cancer free. Then I realized there was yet another one that kind of creep-ed up on me when I wasn't looking.

January 13th, 2015

I didn't really even realize it until the end of the day, when after work I was REALLY tired. I was hungry. All I wanted to do was to get into my comfy clothes and slippers and curl up on the couch. But I hadn't gotten my workout in that morning. It was just one of those days where the motivation wasn't there.

Until I realized where I was a year ago on that date. I was in bed. Barely able to lift my head off my pillow because I was so sick.

I couldn't even kiss my babies goodnight. I couldn't sleep next to my husband, because if he rocked the bed too much I would get sick. I was just laying there, basically just wishing the next 5 months of my life away.

And remembering that, was all the motivation I needed to get up and push play on my program.

Why workout that day when I was so tired and hungry? Simply because I could. I would have given anything to just be "tired and hungry" on that date a year ago. I would have given anything to have felt good enough to exercise. It was a feeling that I always took for granted.

But never will again.

Don't take your ability to get up and get moving and get healthy for granted like I did. Because you never know when that choice might not be yours.

Shaun T's New Workout Is HERE! Insanity Max 30 Details!
GAH! It's here!! Shaun T's new workout, Insanity Max 30 has officially launched and guess who is signed up and ready to kick things off starting January 5th!! And guess who is going to be my early morning workout buddy but didn't know what he got signed up for?!?!

Insanity Max 30 Program Details!
Shaun T’s new workout, Insanity Max 30, has been one of the biggest releases yet and I KNOW is going to sell out fast!

Get this, each workout is ONLY 30 minutes long but is going to give you the workout of your life. The goal isn't to get through the whole 30 minutes either. The goal is to go as hard as you possibly can and "max out". It's a 60 day program, where you workout 5 days a week. It has 150 new cardio and strength moves that are, well, for lack of better words, insane.

Insanity Max 30: What is "Maxing Out"?
Basically, maxing out is the point that you just can't do any more OR the point at which you can do any more without losing proper form. So even if you might be able to struggle through but you are getting sloppy and can't hold form? Yup, you've maxed out. The idea is that you keep track of the time when you "max out" in each workout and then when you come back to do that workout again, the goal is to just beat your previous max out time. That's probably the thing I love the most about Insanity Max 30, it's like a competition with yourself!

Insanity Max 30
Insanity Max 30: Am I Ready?!?!
Here's my second favorite thing about the program. It's a seriously challenging program but you can start it no matter where you are in your fitness level. I am still only a few months out of finishing treatment and I know I can do this program. There is a modifier the ENTIRE TIME and you get a serious workout even if you have to modify the entire time until you max out. So this is the perfect program for people who are just starting out, for people looking for a total transformation or for people who have already graduated from some of the extreme programs!
Insanity Max 30

Insanity Max 30 Program Includes...
Here's what you get with the program....

Keeping It Real

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

I bet some of the readers of our blog (mostly our family members) are probably thinking that its looking a little different lately since we started our health journey. Although we've made a lot of changes and although some may have appeared "sales-y", that will never be the intention of this blog.

I started this blog almost SIX years ago now (whoa) so we would have a way to share our pregnancy journey with our long distance family members. We kicked this baby off with the announcement that Emma Kathryn was on the way. We have been through our ups and downs with the blog. I've taken breaks from it when I've needed to. I've posted things that have upset family members before. But I've always been open and honest and all these changes that you are seeing aren't going to change that. It's always been an unbelievable outlet for me, a way to share our story, no matter what that story looked like.

It just feels indescribable to finally be able to share our new story. We are happier then we have ever been. And we just want to share how we got here.

I've been in the market for a new phone lately and I was just realizing that I'll finally have to avoid my fears and upload everything to The Cloud so I don't lose all of my pictures and videos since our home computer is still somewhat out of commission. So that started me into looking back through all my pictures and of course there are tons where the kids were little that just struck me how much time was flying by. Then there were the pictures that came after my diagnosis. Those pictures are much harder to look at.

Like this one. This picture is from October 15th, 2013. This was the day right in the middle of diagnosis. The Monday before was when I went in for my first mammogram and pretty much got diagnosed right then and there. The day after this was the day I got the call with the biopsy results that sealed the deal. But that day in between? That was the day I went on Jack's first field trip to the pumpkin patch. I had those sunglasses on all day because I just kept crying. I kept getting phone calls from the hospital, trying to set up meetings with surgeons. Probably one of the hardest days out of all of them. But you know what, I kept up with life, and my Squishy had an awesome day at the Pumpkin Patch. Even though Mommy was a hot mess.

This picture was taken on October 19th, the Saturday after diagnosis. I didn't know what to do with myself this day. All I wanted to do was curl up in a ball under a blanket with the babies. It still didn't seem real. I think the kids knew something was wrong, but maybe just not sure what. But they stuck by my side that day. I remember being so torn with my thoughts because I just kept saying to myself that I didn't FEEL sick, so I should get up and do something. Then the next minute I just kept saying to myself, no, you have CANCER, you need to rest. I didn't know what to do.

Here's another tough one. I both love and hate this picture. I love it because it's probably the best picture I have of me and my girl. She was so excited to go see the photographer for pictures. But I hate this picture at the same time because of the reason behind it. This was ten days after my official diagnosis and it was a spur of the moment family photo shoot because I was afraid I wasn't going to have any pictures of my family for a long time. I had no idea outside of surgery what kind of treatment I was in store for, but deep down I just had a feeling that chemo was in the cards. And I was scared. I have a smile on my face but I was scared to death as to what was to come.

Here is another picture that is pretty high on the list. It's probably the cutest picture of my kids like ever (but seriously, they are pretty damn cute right?). This was less than a month after my surgery and I was still having trouble recovering. I had a ton of trouble sleeping, and it took me a good six weeks to be able to get out of sleeping in a recliner in our bedroom. This was the first snow day of the season last year, and the kids were begging me to go play outside with them. But I felt awful. So I had to sit back and watch as Daddy got to build a snowman, make snow angels, you name it. They were so excited. I remember walking outside just briefly to snap a few pictures and they just didn't understand why Mommy couldn't play. It was heartbreaking.

This was on December 16th, exactly two months from diagnosis. This was the day I was headed to meet my oncologist for the first time and figure out what the plan was. I never wore my hair down. Like ever. But I just knew what was coming that day. I just knew I was going to get signed up for chemo. And for some reason, I felt like as soon as my oncologist said those words, my hair would fall out. So I felt like it was the last picture I would ever take with my hair down. I know, seems stupid. But that's what it felt like. That appointment was like getting kicked in the stomach repeatedly. Too many phrases like "because of the higher risk nature of your breast cancer..." and "worst possible side effects are heart failure and leukemia..." and "complete genetic counseling/testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes...". That last one is what scared me the most. To this day I have yet to fill out the paperwork to get the genetic testing done because I'm scared to death to find out that I'm a mutation-carrier, and could have passed that on to Emma.

My oncologist gave me until after the holidays before starting treatment, so right after the new year, on January 3rd I headed in for my pre-chemo visit. I got six different prescriptions that day, and we talked IN DEPTH about all the side effects of both the AC and the Taxol chemo treatments. For the first time I saw the schedule, that had procedure for port placement on January 7th, a start date of January 13th and an end date of not until May 28th. I could barely even see past the next day, let alone five months from then. It felt like as soon as you picked yourself back up from getting kicked during the first appointment, you were back there before you knew it, still getting kicked. Needless to say I left that appointment and drove straight to the mall to a hair salon that accepted walk ins. I got most of it cut off and donated my hair. One of those I'm smiling in the picture but secretly full of sadness on the inside.

This was taken on January 13th, my first day of chemo. Wes and I actually laughed a lot that day because it was our defense mechanism. We didn't know what to do. We didn't know how to act. We didn't know what I was going to feel like. We were still having trouble with our insurance company clearing my nausea meds and we didn't get that all sorted out until too late. I had always heard "Day 3" was the worst, so I wasn't expecting it when it hit me a few hours later. That night was probably the worst I felt the entire time. It's much harder to chase down the nausea after it's already set in, then when you keep up with it so that night the medications basically didn't work at all.

This was the last of my four big AC treatments. Man, these were gnarly. Looking back I honestly don't know how I worked the week after each treatment, especially near the end. By the third and fourth treatment I was having a lot of issues with anticipatory nausea. Basically, my body started to realize what was coming so I would feel very sick before I even started. By treatment number four, I couldn't even look at those vials of the red devil. I couldn't watch the nurse push it into the IV cords. I just wanted to leave. I had to BLAST my music so I couldn't hear what was going on. I had to almost completely leave my body, go somewhere else mentally. I couldn't bare to think of that stuff coursing through my veins anymore. I couldn't bare to think of the smell of it as I sweated it out laying in bed. I couldn't bare the smells of the oncologist lobby, or of the alcohol wipes that were being used every time you turned around. I can't wear that little white hoodie anymore because it's what I wore to almost every treatment so they could easily access my port.

But you know what...

after all that...

the pictures on my phone now look like this...

They are proof that I am taking time out for MYSELF.
I'm becoming a better person. Better friend. Better wife. Better mother. Better everything.

I'm facing my fears because my self confidence is building by the day.
I'm back to being me again. And maybe even a better version.

I'm having a ton of fun with my family.
These are genuine smiles. Not fake ones. Or ones where I'm dying inside.

I'm happy. Like, stupid happy.
Like, the happiest I've ever been.

I have big goals and big dreams for our family now.
Not just goals of how much money I want to make in life.

I'm straightening out my priorities.
They still may not be perfect yet, but I'm on the right track.

I'm focused on helping my family THRIVE.
I'm no longer focused on just "making it through each day".

I'm focused on all the things we wanted to do before, but couldn't.
Or that I couldn't truly enjoy.

So the next time that one of our posts seems "sales-y", just know that's not our intention. It's just a by-product of what has helped us get to this positive, happy, fulfilling place in life. We don't want to sell you. We just want to share what is working for us because if it worked for us, it can work for anyone.

New P90 Program Review!

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

I am so excited about what's coming!! I'm guessing most of you have heard of Tony Horton, the trainer behind the super popular P90X (which Wes and I did a few years back), P90X2, P90X3, 10-Minute Trainer and now, the new P90 fitness program!

New P90 Program Review

I can't wait to try this one out because not only did Wes and I love P90X a few years ago, we had trouble sticking with it because of the length of the programs and it was a tough program to start out with when you are just trying to build up your fitness level. Well that's exactly why Tony Horton created the new P90 program. P90 is a great opportunity for anyone, regardless of age or your fitness level! Plus, it's shorter workouts so its easy to start with when you are trying to get in the habit of working fitness into your daily routine. So whether you haven't exercised in the past ten years, or if you are just looking to maintain what you have accomplished so far, this is a great way to do it.

New P90 Program Review: Whats The Difference?

I had heard about this new program for a while and was always wondering what the difference was (sometimes it's tricky to figure out by the names) so in a nutshell, it's basically a less intense, quicker version of P90X, that will still give you some major results!

New P90 Program Review: Program Details

P90 is the same overall program length of Tony Horton's previous workouts at 90 days. The workout length ranges from 25 to 45 minutes. The base kit comes with 10 workouts plus 1 bonus workout.

New P90 Program Review: Release Date

We are expecting the new P90 program to be released sometime this fall. Wes and I are heading to a local Super Saturday event at the end of September where we will actually get to try out one of the workouts from P90 so I can't wait to give you an updated P90 Program Review!

My Why to Becoming a Beachbody Coach! (From Wes!)

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

My Why to Becoming a Beachbody Coach! (Hint, it will have a running theme from Laura's!)

What is Beachbody Coaching?  Is it a Pyramid Scheme? Is it some ridiculous sales pitch to get people in hopes to make a few bucks? Is it some fad that will pass in the coming months? As Laura and I have come to find out, it truly is none of these things. All the people we have encountered when we decided to start this journey all had remarkable stories and reason's for joining as a Beachbody coach. And as Laura pointed out, not one of them was financial (which can be a nice side bonus if you are DEDICATED to making it happen.)

Everyone we came across had very personal "why's" and when Laura first brought this opportunity to my attention I was skeptical of the coaching aspect.  However, the more and more I started watching these folks videos and reading their posts about their passions and wants, I started to realize that they all have some very common wants and desires that I have.

My why started out with the desire for accountability in my workouts and a more healthy eating routine. I am a runner, but I never was truly pushing myself. I always said, "we need to eat more healthy!" Which we would for a week or two then it would tail off. So I saw this is a good opportunity to hold myself more accountable.  How was I going to help or motivate someone to eat well and exercise, if I wasn't really doing it myself?? So, Laura and I did a lot of research, and talked and we ultimately decided to join. And we admit, somewhat still skeptical.

As the next week or so went buy and the more and more video's I watched, everyone always stressed to find your "why" for wanting to coach, which I thought I had.  But as I slowly started to realize that my original "why" was only the surface of my real "why."

I am a federal contractor by day, so the nature of my business is fluid and always changing.  However, over the last five years, I have been blessed with being on a long term contract and have not had to worry about job security.  However, over the past 3 or 4 months, I was in job limbo. I was told by my current contract that I could only stay onboard until the end of July (it dragged to the end of August in the end). So, I began looking at the current openings my company had. I started looking in Mid-March....by the end of July, after sending out over 200 resumes, I didn't get one call back or have one interview lined up. I was told that if July 31st came and I had no job lined up, I would be let go. We had just bought a new house (which we love!), I have two kids to help support, and my wife just had finished cancer treatment. I was trying to hide my stress and fear from the kids and Laura, because God knows we have had enough of that over the last few months. I wanted to be the "strong" one that kept things moving along and didn't want to add to the day to day stress on Laura or the kids. I started to think about what the most important thing to me was, and obviously the first thing that jumped out at me was my family. I had spent so much time over the last 4-5 months worrying over losing my job, I forgot to step back and realize, my family is more important that any corporate job. I wanted to be the Dad who dropped his kids off at the bus stop and was there to see them when they were dropped off in the afternoon. I wanted to be the Dad that was able to be at all the practices, recitals, soccer games, gymnastic practices....I didn't want to miss a second of any of it. Like Laura said, with my job being Federal Contracting I was afraid I was going to wake up one day and realize, I spent the last 10-12 years commuting 4.5 + hours a day to and from work and I got home too late to see Jack pitch in a game or I got home to late to watch Emma score her first goal.

My FAMILY is my why. I still want to be held accountable for my workouts, but the big reason I am so excited about this opportunity is because it could give me the chance to LIVE A LIFE OF DESIGN, own my own time, at all hours, not just between the hours of 7:00pm - 6:00am (giving me a whooping 45 minutes with the kids in the evenings.) To be able to help Emma and Jack establish healthy eating habits, by showing them Mommy and Daddy are doing it too. I want to be there to be the loudest most obnoxious parent cheering when Emma scores a goal or Jack strikes out the side (of course when they are pre-teen and teens, I will need to tone that down a bit or they will disown me for embarrassing them!) With the understanding that I am going to need to WORK to accomplish that, that's ok, because its something that I feel strongly about.

So if this sounds familiar to you, and you are interested in joining our team, or even if you are just looking to start writing a new story for you or your family, don't hesitate to reach out to us. We would love to have you join us in our journey.

Beachbody Coaching: My Why (It's Not What You Think)

Saturday, August 9, 2014

I have to say that it didn't take long after signing up as an Independent Beachbody Coach to hear about all of the "whys" from the other coaches. What the surprising thing was, was that I didn't (and still haven't) heard one person talk about money being their "why". Sure, it's a perk that comes along with being a coach, but only if you want it to be and only if you decide to put the work in to try to help others.

What surprised me about most of the "whys" from other Beachbody Coaches was that the majority of them revolved around their hopes and dreams for their family. There was no doubt in my or Wes's mind that this was a good place for us, because a lot of those "whys" that we heard, we could have written ourselves. They were about wanting to spend more time with their family. They were about people wanting to choose a life of design. They were about people not wanting to live a life of complacency, just going through the motions. Wishing away the Monday through Friday work week, to spend a whopping two days out of seven with their family, in between using those two days to get ready for the next Monday through Friday work week.

We were already starting to focus on a new journey for our family because you can't go through something like we went through over the past year and NOT come out with a different view of life. We could have easily just joined with a free coach to help us too, but after truly thinking about our "why", it was like the choice was made for us. I admit, I was completely skeptical, just like most people probably are when they hear about the opportunity of becoming a coach. Part of me didn't even want to entertain the idea because A) I'm busy enough B) how could I help others if I wasn't a health or fitness expert myself and C) I was afraid to admit my "why".

I had a lot of "whys" running through my mind, but there was just something that wasn't sitting right. Almost like an itch that I couldn't scratch. There were so many reasons that I wanted to do this, that didn't have anything to do with money. I wanted to hold myself accountable for sticking with my health and fitness goals for a change. I wanted to make this a transformation for our whole family. I wanted to set a better example for Emma and Jack. I wanted to learn how to help other cancer survivors who were struggling with where to start after treatment. All of those things were 100% true, and still are. But it just felt like something was missing. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks.

One of the things my coach said to me when I was talking to her about my why, was this...
"They say that "your why" is supposed to make you cry."

And it sure did.
I fully know this sounds crazy to most of you. And especially for our family members that read this blog, probably seems like its out of no where, but just stick with me for a second.

I remembered coming across this post one day, that I couldn't even finish reading. It was called "The Important Thing About Yelling", by Rachel Macy Stafford. I couldn't finish reading it because it just hit too close to home. I chalked it up to the fact that I was going through cancer treatment and that it was okay for me to get frustrated more easily than others. So at the time, I closed the post and went on about my business. But even though I didn't read the whole post, I remembered it, it struck a cord, so I ultimately ended up going back.

If you haven't seen it yourself, the post talks about Rachel "in the midst of her highly distracted life" and how she became a yeller. It wasn't often, but when it happened, she said it was extreme. And it wasn't even about anything big. It was the normal mishaps and typical kid issues and attitudes that irritated her to the point of losing control. Just like what was happening to me.

It wasn't an easy pill to swallow. And for a long time, I avoided trying to even think about it. It was when I started to notice the look on Emma's face after she made an innocent mistake, or spilled some milk. She was afraid of Mommy's reaction. That was a hard thing to watch. Just like Rachel did, I realized that was not the mother that I wanted my kids to grow up with.

After a lot of soul searching and self reflecting, I realized that it all stemmed from just being spread too thin. I was overloaded by to do lists, my inability to say no, my constant need to try chase perfection as a working mom. In the little free time that I had, I was focusing on things that weren't truly important or benefiting my family, like what the Kardashian's posted on Instagram that day, or trying to catch up with some reality TV show.

It was like finally, everything seemed to fit together. Everything I learned about myself, and what I wanted out of life after surviving breast cancer. The goals I had for myself. The things I needed to change about myself to become the mother that I wanted to be. The things I wanted for my family.

Then I thought, well crap. If I become a Beachbody Coach, isn't that just adding to my to do list? Isn't that going to make it worse? Nope. It helped. 1,000 times over. It helped.

It helped me focus on what is TRULY important in life. And guess what. It's not what the Kardashian's posted on Instagram. It helped me to realize that I need to slow down. It was something that Wes and I could focus on together, for our family. The personal development that comes along with being a coach has been invaluable. I don't claim to have all the answers, and I probably never will. I don't yet know exactly where this new journey will lead us, but it feels so incredibly good to be so focused on something healthy for our family.

Obviously as a parent of a five year old and a three year old there are going to be frustrating days. I will never claim to be Mary Sunshine every single day. But I have made the CHOICE to become more aware of my reactions and get those non-value added things out of my life. And you know what? It's working. I can see the change in Emma. I can see the change in myself. Like Rachel says, "The important thing is ... life is too short to get upset over spilled cereal and misplaced shoes."

So if you ever run into a Beachbody Coach. Don't assume they are in it for the money. Don't assume its a get rich quick scheme. Ask them what their "why" is, and I think you'll be surprised.

For me, my why is my family. My why is learning how to TRULY focus on what is important in life. My why is learning how to slow life down, before I wake up one day and Emma and Jack are in college, and I regret yelling at them over spilled milk every day. My why is putting my story out there, no matter how vulnerable it makes me, or how scared I am of people's reactions. My why is sharing my journey as a cancer survivor, to hopefully help others who also feel like they got dropped off a cliff after treatment. My why is learning how to teach my kids to make good decisions for their body's.

If this sounds familiar to you, and you are interested in joining our team, or even if you just are looking to start writing a new story for you or your family, don't hesitate. Take it from Rachel, no matter what happened yesterday, today is a new day.
